Today I Love

I love having all the windows in the house opened, and the breeze filtering through.  Our high today is 69 degrees!  I love it!  I also love playing with the little guy behind the couch.  Silly time is a must.

I love sitting in the sunspots, reading.  I finally started reading "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins.  I'm addicted so far.  Did you know they're making a movie based on the books?  Here's the trailer.  Looks awesome!

<object width="512" height="288"><param name="movie" value="http://www.hulu.com/embed/siliMqT72Dh0N30uwHnxSA"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.hulu.com/embed/siliMqT72Dh0N30uwHnxSA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"  width="512" height="288" allowFullScreen="true"></embed></object>

Dylan is usually sprawled out across my lap while I'm reading.  Luckily for me, he was "taking a break from sunny time"  is what he said.

I love that my tea "spoke" to me this morning.  "The heart sees deeper than the eye."  And, all in my heart mug.  Great start to a great day.  It's always a nice reminder to listen to your heart.

The absolute best part of my day is when I get to steal kisses from that little guy.  It's so nice when he wants to cuddle.  That doesn't happen often with energetic boys.  I'll steal those kissies if I have to!

That's a peak into my world.  What do you love today?

It's sooo fall!

As you may have gathered from this post, I LOVE FALL!  Isn't it amazing to open up the windows?  I swear you can just smell fall in the air.  What's even better is baking fall goodies!  I found a recipe for Pumpkin Bread with Cream Cheese filling on Pinterest.

You MUST make this.  The recipe yields 2 loaves... I should've made a double batch.  Ten little minutes after I pulled it out of the oven, half of one loaf is already disappeared.  But, here is what I've learned:  When putting the mix in your loaf pans, put just enough dough in to cover the bottom of the pan.  Also, if you love cream cheese, double up on that part of the recipe.  Such a fabulous fall delight AND my house smells wonderful.

Yay for fall!

Fun Local Favorite {Barracuda Bazaar}

Over Labor Day weekend, my fabulous parents came up to visit.  We had a blast just hanging out together.  We BBQ'd, we had a few drinks, and we went shopping!  If you are a Colorado Springs local or happen to come to town, you have to stop by Barracuda Bazaar {2603 W. Colorado Ave}!

You'll have to check out their website to see the tons of cute clothes.  Barracuda Bazaar is also the home of Gnarly Teeth, fabulous bacon products (from wallets to lip gloss).  They also have things that may be offensive to some, but all in good fun.  My favorite example:  A bumper sticker that read, "Sorry I didn't make it to church.  I was busy practicing witchcrafts and becoming a lesbian."  LOL, right!?  (And in no way am I making ANY jabs at church/religion/sexual orientation/whatever.  It was just a sticker, folks.)

Here's what we walked out with.

Just Sayin' sticky notes... I mean I'm always Just Sayin', why not write it out?  Maybe people would listen better if I handed them this note?

And the BEST, which I should probably go get more...

Silly fingers!!!!  I just love the tentacle.  And the pickle finger... awesome!

We like to have finger fights.  Silly time!

I need a better camera... and to remember to turn off my flash.  Oops.

But anyways, stop by Barracuda Bazaar... I just love that place!  I know you will, too!

{This post was not compensated.  I wrote about it because I love the shop and want to share some local favorites.  Go Indie Businesses!}

New Sponsor and New Bag

{via Diana}

You might have noticed a new sponsor on the left sidebar.  I want to introduce you to Miss Diana from dianapantz!  She's a fabulous crafter who's sharing her journey in becoming self-employed, vegan cooking, and fun photos from adventures in Minneapolis.  You'll have to check out her blog here and her shop here!

{via Diana}

Isn't she cute?

Speaking of cute....

I just finished and shipped a custom order.  I was asked to make a bag with an owl on it... no further instructions.  With some funky fabric and Grey's Anatomy re-runs, this beauty emerged.  I loved making it so much, I'm listing them as a new fall bag for Camp Moxie.  These will be in limited supply, so grab one (or five) up while you can!

Here's a closer view at the details in the stitching, which is all hand embroidered... and the owl is my own drawing and design... and the tree branch too.. which is glittery... oh I just love all the details.

You can send me a message if you would like an owl bag (ashleycrenshaw.blog@gmail.com), or head over to Camp Moxie to place an order!

Helpful Hints for Husbands no. 2 - Seasonal Decorating

Oh, fall is in the air!  What?  No one has said that yet?  They have all the stuff out!  Well, I made up that it is fall at my house.  It's the most wonderful time of the year!  (I think it's better than Christmas.. sometimes.)  But, yesterday, in the 95 degree heat of Colorado, I was hanging my wreaths and setting out pumpkins.  I had this frightening thought, "My husband will think I'm insane."

So, HUSBANDS START READING HERE:

It's close the to end of August, and you know your spouse is excited for the arrival of Fall {keep in mind this applies to any holiday where decor and displays are involved}.   You still have the sprinklers out for weekend water fun, and Fall is the last thing on your mind. The weather and the calendar say it is not time for Fall, but your spouse has decided differently.  Your house has now thrown-up pumpkins and leaves... in August.

You may want to roll your eyes, say she's too early... blah blah.  Keep those comments to yourself.  Maybe insert a line such as, "Lookin' good, honey!"  Please do not use any sarcasm when you say your comment.... we know better.  If you don't want to be in the middle of the seasonal decorating business, go to the candle store and pick up a Fall scent.  Generally, anything that reminds you of apple pies will do.  Your wife will see this as a contribution instead of avoidance in decorating.  Bonus points!  A situation that works for you and her.

New Totes for Camp Moxie *Updated*

Yay!  I've finally had a chance to make some new tote bags for Camp Moxie!  For some reason, Etsy is down right now, but as soon as it's up again, these will be listed.  Here's a look.

This tote is about 13.25" tall and 13" wide with handles measuring 5.25" from top of the bag to top of the handle.  It has a great, light floral fabric on the inside that has a vintage-y feel.  I've paired that with a sassy saying on the front, "Take Me Out", which I hand-painted using water-based screen printing ink.  The flower on the outside was handmade using the same fabric that lines the inside.

This is my favorite for fall!  It's a mini messenger bag with adjustable strap.  The flowers on the front are hand-rolled rosettes which are made from the same fabric lining the inside.  The upper strap ranges from about 11" to about 21" making the possibility of wearing positions versatile.  The bag itself is 14.5" wide, 8" tall, and comfortably stretches about 12" fat (from back to front as if you were filling it).  I also love that on each side of the bag there are pockets to keep keys or water bottles at easy access.

Simple and awesome.  OK, so I may be biased because I made them, but I promise you will enjoy them as well.  A great gift for the stylish chica.. oh and Christmas is coming up!  If you want to call dibs on these before I list them on Etsy, you can e-mail me {ashleycrenshaw.blog@gmail.com}.  {You can always e-mail me if you see something you like!}  Also, e-mail me if you have any questions!  Thanks for browsing!

A new column has been added.  Look left.  I guess you noticed a repetition of these babies:

I would much rather see your widgets/buttons/ads in place of that.  You can read all the details on the Sponsor Info page, but here's the jist of it.  You place my button on your blog, and I place your button on my blog.  So simple, yet so effective.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me (ashleycrenshaw.blog@gmail.com)!  I would love to hear from you.  Hope you decide to take advantage of me.... wait, that came out awkward. :S

Playing in the Rain

I love when you can see the storms coming over the mountains.  The air gets chilly, and begins to smell fresh.  Ahhh!  I was trying to catch the lightening on camera, but it was being tricky.  Not an easy task on a cell phone.

Again, no luck.  Another storm picture.

BUT, when we got home, the fun began.

There was a downpour!  We also have a little guy that LOVES playing in the rain.  He's such a water baby!

Outside time lasted a good 20 minutes, the downpour was moving towards flooding level, and Dylan was chilled to the bone.  It was a perfect way for us to cool off in this summer heat.  Phew!  Who's ready for fall!?  Lol!

Helpful Hints for Husbands- the Intro and Shopping Guide

There is no doubt that I love my husband.  He's a great guy.  There are just moments when I think, "He just doesn't get it."  He knows I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but bought a jewelry chest anyways.  I asked him to take off his work boots, but he leaves them in the middle of our freshly cleaned floor.  It's not that I totally get angry at him, but after awhile I'm mad at him for all the little things he just didn't 'get'.  This has inspired me to start Helpful Hints for Husbands.  A way for men to peer into the mysterious world of women, and come out with a valuable nugget of information.  You may also insert life-partner/boyfriend/girlfriend into the equation.

Let's begin.

Husbands (or other), women have learned that you do not like to shop for us.  You may not even like shopping at all.  But, there are always anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays that send you to the store to pick out a gift for the wife.  You may be panicking, but I can give you a few clues.

1) Never, EVER, underestimate the value of hacking into or following your partner's pins on Pinterest.  Here are my Pinterest boards which include things such as products I love, food I want to eat, and clothes I want to wear.  Voila!  Ideas for dinner, and gifts.  Also, look for common themes.  Is there one certain color she posts often?  Are there lots of pictures that hint at relaxation?  Maybe she needs some time out with her friends?  Maybe she just wants to read a book in peace?  Pinterest can be a valuable tool, spouses!

2)  Have you checked out your local Groupons?  I bet you'll find a good deal on dinner, spa days, even an exciting outdoor adventure.  Oooooh!  I just caught a two-night retreat on sale!  Go out, get a room, just have some fun!

3)  Is there a date or experience you had as a couple that always keeps popping up?  Why not recreate that moment?  It may not be over-the-top, but there is something magical about revisiting special moments.  I think it would be magical to have the kiddo at a friend's house while husband and I order pizza and chill out in our jammies.  I think the alone time is so important.  Let her know you're there for her.

So, if you didn't read it all here's a recap.  1) Check out Pinterest.  2) Find a sweet spa deal on Groupon.  3)  Hire a sitter and have some grown-up time.  I got your back boys!

And there we were...

Well this guy had surgery last week.  Nothing major, but as surgeries go it comes with lots of care and cuddling.  There has been a lot going on and I can't wait to share.  I just have to get my thoughts and pictures organized.  In the meantime, grab a popsicle and enjoy the last bit of summer!

Pete the Cat

{via Amazon}

Today was Storytime at the library.  This was the first time in TWO years of going to the library that Dylan actually agreed to go.  Thank goodness he did!  We got to read this cute little story called, "Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes" by Eric Litwin.  I love this book.  It's such a cute story, and Dylan was waaaay into it.  There's also this video of two adorable girls reading Pete.  Check it out!

My Mirena Experience

{via}

This post is really personal, but I feel I need to say something about this matter.  A) Many things about me have been explained.  B) I may help someone reading this.  C) This is part of my journey, a major road in fact.  It is quite wordy, but is going to be soul-cleansing once it's out there.

February 2008, I made the decision to use Mirena, a form of birth control.  I'm usually not on top of taking a pill everyday, so I felt this was a better option for me.  My husband and I felt comfortable with waiting to expand our family.  I had read the information, online and in the pamphlet, numerous times.  The information given to me stated there would be minimal side effects, which only affected about 10% of Mirena users.

The first year, everything was terrific.  I became used feeling the device in my body, I was not having my period any longer, and I was pregnancy free.  Mirena had be won over.  I told everyone they should try it.  As the months passed, I began to feel tired and cloudy.  My husband had deployed to Iraq again, so I attributed this tiredness to being "a single parent" and stress related to deployments.  Then, I began noticing changes in my body and my emotions.  I felt bloated.  I couldn't sleep well.  I had been eating better and exercising, but not losing weight.  I was very irritable, depressive, snappy, basically unpleasant to be around.  I felt angry at my husband and child all the time.  I noticed dark, thick facial hair.  I had acne on my thighs... really?  This was too much.

The issues with my body I pushed to the side because my emotional well-being was the major issue.  After consulting with my doctor in October 2010, I was placed on Zoloft and Xanax.  The medication was to help manage my anxiety, stress, and depression.  I felt a weight start to lift off my shoulders.  My mood lightened, and I felt this was the answer.  I began working out again.  I was eating healthier.  I was working on Camp Moxie and the blog.

In March of this year, my husband had returned from his most recent deployment.  I felt this would aid in the relief of my emotional warfare.  The problem became worse.  I was still battling all the issues with my body.  The medication was no longer curbing the darker emotions.  Something was really not right.

Last month, I had an awesome chat with a friend who's studying holistic medicine.  I told her what was going on with my body and it clicked that my problems must be from the Mirena, as I had stopped taking Zoloft and Xanax.  (These are pretty scary meds to be on.  Do read up on them if you are taking them.  Know what you're putting in your body!  Talk to your doctor.)  Sure enough, I looked up "side effects of Mirena", and up popped thousands of pages.  (This is the site I used in my decision making.)  I was feeling major side-effects.  All of which were described above were mentioned my lots of other women.  Before Mirena, I never had any of those issues.   Mirena had to come out.

Last Thursday, Mirena came out.  Immediately, I felt the clouds back out of my brain.  I had my uterus back!!  I had my brain back!!  I cannot tell you how amazing this has been for me.  This explains why I haven't been able to focus on my blogging (which I love) and Camp Moxie (majorly in love with), and most importantly, I feel like I can be better for my family.

 Now, I understand that some may not experience these symptoms.  Some may be rockin' with Mirena, but it affects everyone differently.  If you would like to talk about my experience with Mirena, please e-mail me.  This is a pretty sensitive subject for some, and if I can help you in any way, I'm here!  Thank you for letting me get this out.  Now, we're on to a magical new week!

Listening

{via Pinterest}

I have been reading an unhealthy amount of self-help books lately.  Not all are self-help, some are creative thinking, creative technique books, etc.  I just wanted to freak everyone out and call them all self-help books.  For some reason, I have felt the urge to just sit back and learn.  The major thing that I ran across in 4 out of the 6 books I've read, is to be quiet and listen to that little voice in your head.  Elizabeth Lesser (author of Broken Open), called that little voice your soul.  Isn't that awesome?  I only thought of it as my conscious, and who wants to listen to the nagging voice?  It just makes perfect sense that your soul is the one yelling at you!

I came up with a little challenge for myself.  Feel free to join if you want.   In the morning and evening, I'm setting aside 5-10 minutes, all alone, to sit and be quiet.  There are Christmas lights up in my studio, so you know I'll plug those in.  Also, I'm pulling out my aromatherapy candles.  I'm trying this for one week to see how it goes.  The point is to be still and listen.  I feel Zen already!

My Design Heroes

I love the Novogratz family.  I had my first taste of their design when they aired Nine by Design on Bravo, and they captured my heart forever.  Robert and Cortney are so amazing - brilliant sense of style, brilliant sense of themselves, and most importantly, brilliantly devoted to their family (seven kiddos!!).  I tuned in for the show religiously (an understatement), for a dose of  design 'breath of fresh air', if you will.

I was sad when Bob and Cortney didn't return to Bravo, but picked up their book (highly recommended) to keep on design dreaming.

{via Amazon}

About two weeks ago, while flipping through channels, I saw Cortney on TV, HGTV to be exact!!  The Novogratzs are back with "Home by Novogratz" on HGTV.  I absolutely cannot wait!  It airs tomorrow night, so check your listings.  Not sure you want to watch?  Look at this picture of Novogratz design magic.

{via HGTV}

What I love the most about Sixx Designs is the "cajones" they have to just go for it!  They keep to a budget, but keep it fresh and fascinating.  You better tune in, it's so worth your time!!

On a side note:  Bob and Cortney, you are MORE than welcome to come hang out with me in Colorado!!  =)  Let's go thrift shopping.  Let's decorate something.  Let's design something together!  Oh, that would be a blasty blast!

My Element

Have you creative minds out there read this book!?  You have GOT to read it.  My mind was blown about a million times while I read it.  I feel like I know what I'm looking for, I know what I'm doing, and I know how to get there.  I don't want to spoil too much of it, so go read it.

I have learned that my Element has to do with creativity.  I know I want to explore my paths.  I want to nurture my Element.  I also know I need to find a mentor.  There's a lot of work to be done, but it's going to be so rewarding.

The one thing I've really loved about this book is the way Ken breaks everything down, YO!  OK, Ken doesn't 'break it down' like I just pictured a rapper would.  Ken does actually unveil some of the standards we thought we could trust.  He'll tell you stories about the journeys of those who are living in their Element.  Overall, inspiring.

I'm definitely going to read his next book, "Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative."  I just like his approach to creativity.  It's kind of like he says, "It's OK to be you."  I have heard this many of times, but Ken said it the way I needed to receive it.

Enough about it, go read!!  Let me know if you're inspired, too!!

Moon Sand {Make it Magical Monday}

After seeing everyone's pins (on Pinterest), we decided to make our own Moon Sand.  I know it can be quite expensive in the stores.  That's probably why we never had it as kids... (feel sorry for me).  But, being the adventurous mother I am, we dove right in.

First off, you'll need sand, cornstarch, and water.  Hopefully, you have water at home, but for the rest, head to the Dollar Store.  The texture of the sand at other places wasn't what I was really going for.  I think the finer sand feels more like the real Moon Sand.  On the other hand, if you're teaching your kids about textures (rough/smooth), I would get different textures of sand.  You could even throw in colorful, fish tank rocks to the rough texture.... man I feel smart.

So, the recipes I have found around the web have varied.  I think any way you go, you'll have to adjust to your liking.  Start out with 1.5 cups of cornstarch, and mix that with 3/4 cups of water until smooth.  (If you want to color your mix, I would stir that in now.)  Then, divide 3 cups of sand to 1 cup each, and gradually mix 1 cup of sand at a time, into the cornstarch mix, until smooth.  It does take a little bit of work and time.

Our mixture looks... special, because I don't like to follow directions.  Who knew...  Anyways, Dylan wanted it yellow.  At this stage, adding food coloring now will leave nice stains on your hand.  I'm not sure how the coloring does if you follow directions.  I do have one good tip for you!  You know the plastic sheets that you put under your child's high chair?  SAVE THEM!  This plastic mat is perfect to lay down and play in the moon sand.

Once your mixture is complete, invite all your construction and dinosaur friends over to play!

When the playing is over, I dumped my moon sand into an empty dish-washing detergent bucket.  So simple.  I think the whole project cost me $3.00.  That's a heck of a lot cheaper than off the shelf.  Oh, and don't worry if your mixture gets dry.  Just add 1-2 Tbsp. of water and it'll come right back to life.  Love it!

Confused...

Did something on Blogger change over night that I'm not aware of?  All of a sudden, my posts aren't formatted how I created them.  My dashboard is squares, that once used to have meaning... I'm so confused.  I'm working on this and will post tomorrow.

Colorado Renaissance Festival 2011 {pt. 2 that I forgot about}

Ooops, I thought I posted this like... a month ago?  Here it is.. oh and check out part 1 if you missed any details, or want to be reminded of the craziness!

My favorite part was the Petting Zoo.  Note:  It's only weird if you go to the Petting Zoo without a child.  Plus, I absolutely love animals, and I feel I have a little Dr. Doolittle in me.  For instance, this sheep, which walked right up to me and smelled that I had no food.  She decided to come closer, so I began to pet her.  This turned into a whole twenty minute ordeal where she even began moving her head to where she wanted to be scratched.  Some ladies asked if the sheep was soft...  (I was going to say something snarky, but played it nice).  Sheep are not soft.  They live outside, roll around in the hay, and produce this insane oil for their wool, which turns your hand black.

I honestly washed my hands in the pet zoo washing station, then in the bathroom 3 times, then sanitized my hands about 6 more times.  My hand was still oily.  Lesson learned.  I still felt OK about it because I think I made that sheep's life.

There were the usual baby pigs and horses.  All equally adorable and smelly.  Oh, and a random fact I read (and don't remember where)... Did you know that when you see a baby _____ (anything really), it triggers an actual chemical in your brain that makes you soften up and want to care for them?  Crazy, huh?

There was also a rooster in a tower.  Does anyone know why a tower?  Is it a Ren. period thing?  Anyways, Dylan loved that guy.  He would yell, "Cock-A-DOOOODLE-DOOOOO!"  Then, Dylan would yell back, "Do it again!!!"  The rooster would oblige.  It was quite comical, and then I was jealous the rooster wouldn't listen to me.

 Dylan wanted to go on the Butterfly Ride, so we let him.  While we were waiting in line, the husband found a caterpillar on his shirt.  I laughed because I understood the humor of it.  The husband rolled his eyes at me.

 Obviously, he loved the ride.  I just felt sorry for the ladies pushing the whole thing.  It was hot out there.

AND NOW.... for the BEST ACTION of the DAAAAYYYY!!!

This llama, which I have claimed and named Thaddeus (only because he turned out to be kind of snooty).

He followed me around, let me pet him.  Then he ignored me, being cheeky, you know.  And then he came back to me, for the best picture of like... maybe ever, I'm not going to lie.

Yes.  And then we left.  So long Thaddeus.
